A first visit to a casino poker room
A casino poker room is different from the rest of the floor. You play against other guests rather than the house, and a room like Bellagio’s or Wynn’s has its own rules, rhythm and etiquette.

In poker the casino does not bank the game. Instead it takes a “rake”—a small percentage of each pot, capped at a fixed amount—or charges higher-stakes players a fee for each half-hour at the table. That is why a poker room can be the one place in a casino where skill matters over the long run.
Cash games and tournaments
In a cash game, chips represent real money and you can join or leave at any time. In a tournament, you pay a fixed entry for a stack of tournament chips, play until you are eliminated, and prizes go to the top finishers. Tournaments cap your cost at the entry fee; cash games do not.
Reading the stakes
Games are listed by their blinds—“$1/$3 no-limit hold’em” means forced bets of $1 and $3, with no cap on the size of a bet. Each game has a minimum and maximum buy-in. Start at the lowest stake offered, which is still a serious amount at major Las Vegas rooms.
Getting a seat
Give your name and preferred game at the front desk, known as the podium or brush, and wait to be called. Popular games have waiting lists at peak times. Buy chips at the table or the poker-room cage, and keep them on the table while you play.
Table manners
Act only when it is your turn, and say your action clearly—a spoken bet is binding. Push chips forward in one motion, keep your cards on the table and out of sight of others, and never discuss a hand while it is in progress. Only one player may play each hand.
Tipping and jackpots
In US rooms it is customary to tip the dealer a small amount when you win a pot. Some rooms run “bad-beat” jackpots, funded by an extra deduction from each pot; they are a prize draw, not a reason to play longer.
Which rooms in this edit
Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas both run major poker rooms with daily cash games and regular tournament series. Poker plays little or no part at Marina Bay Sands and The Venetian Macao, where the floors are built around banked games such as baccarat.
